Cartridge vs. Sand vs. DE Filters: Which Is Best for Your Pool?

There are three main types of pool filters: sand, DE, and pool filters cartridge. All of them clean your water, but they work differently and have their own maintenance needs and costs. Understanding how each system works in real conditions helps you avoid long-term frustration and pick the filter that fits your lifestyle.

Cartridge filters

A pool filter cartridge uses a pleated polyester media inside plastic end caps to trap dirt and debris — no backwashing or added chemicals required. The pleated design creates a large filtration surface, with bigger units exceeding 300 square feet of media. When it’s time to clean, you simply remove the cartridge and rinse it with a garden hose.

Here’s why you might like cartridge filters:

·     Capture a wide range of particles

·     No backwashing, so you save water

·     Easy removal and quick to clean

·     Handle body oils and lotions well, making them popular for hot tubs and spas

Sand filters

With sand filters, you need a tank filled with specially graded sand. Water enters from the top and flows downward through the sand bed, leaving dirt trapped between the grains. Most sand filters remove particles down to about 20 microns.

To clean them, you need to do a backwash or reverse the water flow to flush debris out of the tank.

Pros and drawbacks to consider:

·     Proven technology with a long track record

·     Works well for larger inground pools

·     Backwashing can run automatically on certain systems

·     Each backwash uses hundreds of gallons of water

DE (diatomaceous earth) filters

DE filters give you the finest filtration available for residential pools. They trap particles as small as 3 microns using DE powder made from fossilized diatoms — microscopic marine organisms whose porous silica shells create an ultra-fine filtering layer.

DE filters work so well because the powdered DE sticks to the grids inside the filter. That powder creates a very fine layer that can trap tiny particles that sand and cartridge filters usually can’t catch.

Benefits and trade-offs:

·     Exceptional water clarity

·     Captures extremely small particles

·     Requires regular DE powder additions

·     Needs more involved cleaning and proper disposal of used DE

DE filters deliver very clear water, but they need more upkeep in hot tubs and spas. The warmer water and higher amount of body oils in those environments cause the grids to get dirty faster, so you’ll have to clean them more often.
