How to Size the Right Harmsco Pool Filter for Your Pool
Picking the correct Harmsco pool filter size is essential because an undersized filter can’t handle the flow your pump pushes through it. When that happens, the filter can build up more internal pressure than it was designed to handle because it’s too small for the pump or the pool’s debris load. That extra strain can damage the filter tank, clamp, or even the pump itself over time.
Here’s a simple way to size your filter properly if you’re considering a cartridge system from Harmsco.
Know your pool size
You need to calculate how much water your
pool holds so you can choose the right Harmsco pool filter size. To do that,
start by finding the pool’s average depth. No matter the shape, the method is
the same:
1.
Measure the deepest point.
2.
Measure the shallowest
point.
3.
Add the two numbers
together.
4. Divide by two to get the average depth.
Example:
Deep end = 12 ft
Shallow end = 4 ft
12 + 4 = 16
16 ÷ 2 = 8 ft average depth
Once you have the average depth, multiply it by your pool’s length and width to get the total cubic feet of water.
Convert cubic feet into gallons
Once you know the pool's size in cubic feet, multiply that number by 7.48 to convert it into gallons (because one cubic foot of water holds 7.48 gallons). That final number is your pool’s total water volume.
Calculate gallons per minute (GPM)
Now determine how fast your system needs to move water.
1. Divide
your total gallons by 8 (for an eight-hour turnover).
2. That
gives you your required gallons per hour (GPH).
3. Divide that GPH by 60 to get gallons per minute (GPM).
Example using a 20,000-gallon pool:
·
20,000 ÷ 8 = 2,500 GPH
· 2,500 ÷ 60 ≈ 42 GPM
Your filter must comfortably handle at least this flow rate to keep turnover on schedule.
Account for feet of head
The plumbing between your pool and pump creates resistance (called “feet of head”), and that resistance slows down water flow. The more pipe length, bends, valves, or extra features you have, the lower your flow rate will be. Estimating this resistance—even roughly—helps you pick the right size of Harmsco pool filters.
Need a replacement cartridge?
If you don’t have the part number for your existing Harmsco cartridge, you can still find the correct match by measuring:
1. Outside
diameter of the end caps (± 1/16")
2. Cartridge
length from end cap to end cap (exclude handles)
3. Top
inside diameter
4. Bottom
inside diameter
5. Filter
name and model (if available)
6. Top and bottom style
Always double-check these dimensions before ordering Harmsco pool filters from us.
